Sustainability is a guiding principle behind everything I make. While it's in the background, it isn't an afterthought. I aim to intentionally choose options that have a low environmental footprint wherever possible, without compromising on quality. Small decisions add up, and this is my way off adding a drop to the growing wave of being mildful of our planet and future.

For fabric items I use upcycled textiles sorced from many many different op shops. Frequenting op shops, ones eyes are open to the reality of the sheer volume of excess and stuff in the world. Around 92 million tonnes of textile waste end up discarded globally each year - which is unfathomable.

By giving pre-loved fabrics a second life, I'm helping to divert some usable materials from landfill. Because of this approach, many pieces are one-of-a-kind, or made in small batches depending on what materials are available. This also includes threads in various forms for bookbinding. Shirts, trousers, dresses, tableclothes, pillow cases, bed spreads, napkins - all items I discover are washed before being turned into something new for your home.

And upcycling isn't just for textiles. Novels, childrens books, old classics, sheet music, gardening tomes, scrap paper and card - pages upon pages are carefully extracted from surrendered books for their old-time character and beautiful illustrations.

Possibly the easiest way to lower environmental impact is to recycle the waste of an impact already made. The papers used for most of my books and paper products are recycled, or contain a percentage of post-consumer waste.

When new papers are used, they are chosen for their environmental credentials as well as their texture and quality - such as being sourced from responsible plantations and forests or production processes that use renewable energy. Every choice is made with care, balancing quality, longevity, and environmental impact.

Some items will include an info sheet on the materials used.

Murray's Cloth

One day, I came across a Marketplace listing of a retiring bookbinder located a few hours away. After spending life as a university professor - binding student thesises and documents as his bread and butter - he made the decision to pass on his collection. While his bindery doors were closing, mine were beginning to open. From Murray's collection, I was lucky enough to purchase a variety of quality bookcloth, foils, and a book press (or nipping press), forming the backbone of my own bindery.

Rolls upon rolls of bookcloth now adorn my kitchen and a cast iron book press sits upon an old bedside table under the coat rack. These materials and hefty equipment are set to last me almost a lifetime themselves, being made for practical durability. However, accurately naming the type and brand of each cloth has proven difficult.

Rather than letting that uncertainty diminish their value, bookcloth from this collection has been affectionately labelled as Murray’s Cloth and will be used in the spirit of honouring secondhand materials and keeping good resources from going to waste.

What it means to be handmade

As many of my pieces are handmade and created using secondhand or upcycled materials, small imperfections or variations may occur. Differences in texture, colour, pattern placement, or finish are a natural part of working with pre-loved materials and traditional handcraft methods. These irregularities are not flaws, but a reflection of the character, individuality, and care taken into the making of each piece — no two are ever exactly the same.
